26.2 Miles! We're doing it for Hunter ... otherwise, we'd just be crazy! We're definitely not elite athletes; it's about finishing the race for Hunter. If you've found our blog, chances are, you know that we're trying to raise at least $10,000 to help pay for the HUGE uninsured costs of our nephew's bone marrow transplant. Please take a second to read about Hunter & our journey to prepare for the Chicago Marathon! E-mail us at brookiej73@yahoo.com for info on making a tax-deductible donation.

Brad ~ 15 Miles

Brad ~ 15 Miles

Let’s just say that I try not to think about the fact that it was only 15 miles. Wow!!! That was tough and I really had a hard time finishing. It did not help that the weather forced a two and half hour delay and we finished in 90 degree 90% humidity and I do not operate well in heat and humidity…sweaty. In fact, I lost about 6 lbs during the run…all water weight as I had four pounds back on within the next couple of hours. There were a couple of memorable times in the run. The first was right at the five mile point, I found a really nice groove as I was thinking about Hunter and praying for him. The groove lasted for about a mile and a half and it was the best of the 15; now I just have to figure out how to make it last longer. The second was at about mile 13. Pretty much everything was shutting down and again thoughts of Hunter put my struggles in perspective. I finished the run in about two hours and twenty minutes. Lessons learned: I can run 15 miles. 50ozs of fluid was not enough. Smile and enjoy it - we are blessed with the health and the freedom to run safely on our streets.

Look forward to Saturday’s 16 mile run…you have to, otherwise it would just ruin your week! :)

Hi there! Brad has been working on our official letter that we'll send out to everyone. I think he's done a wonderful job. Here it is...not sure if it'll all post, but I'm going to try it! (Updated on 9/2/06)

Dear Friends and Family,

206 miles down, 255.2 miles to go – our formal training started on the third week of June, and on October 22nd we will individually run 26.2 miles to complete the Chicago Marathon. 463.2 miles each in 18 weeks…pretty impressive numbers considering that prior to taking on this challenge none of us had run more than 8 miles in one shot. Much more impressive numbers: an ANC of 5,992; platelets of 241,000; and Hgb of 11.1. These are Hunter’s latest blood counts and they translate into a miraculous road to recovering from his bone marrow transplant received in May this year.

In March of 1999, Hunter, our nephew, was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia, an auto-immune disease that destroyed his bone marrow. At age two, Hunter was unable to produce platelets or red and white blood cells, rendering his body incapable of fighting infections. He immediately entered his first round of intense chemotherapy and progressed into remission. Less than a year and a half later he relapsed and required a second round of chemo. Thankfully, for nearly 5 years after that, Hunter was blessed with stable blood counts, and was off all chemo for two years. In January 2006, all of his counts crashed. In February, Hunter, now age 9, underwent a bilateral bone marrow biopsy that determined his disease had transformed into Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, requiring a bone marrow transplant for his survival. A search for a donor match was initiated on February 28th and Hunter received the miracle of new life on May 25th.

So we are running for Hunter. Our training started shortly after his transplant, and his courage provides the inspiration that carries us through the miles. Our daily struggles and pains in training are trivial compared to the road that Hunter has braved and the continued trials he faces as he fights and beats this disease. We are committed to our challenge and we need your support. Hunter’s uninsured medical costs are enormous, so we set a goal to collectively raise at least $10,000. To help with these uninsured expenses a fundraising campaign has been established in Hunter’s honor with the National Transplant Assistance Fund (NTAF). NTAF is a nonprofit that has been assisting the transplant community for the last 23 years.

Each of us has committed to covering the sizable costs associated with running the marathon and raising funds so that 100% of your tax-deductible donation goes directly towards helping Hunter win back his life. You can follow our training and fundraising updates at: http://www.milesformarrow.blogspot.com/. Please consider pledging your support by returning the enclosed donation card to us by October 1st. We will run the 26.2 miles, Hunter will beat his Leukemia, and you will help make it all happen.

Thank you so much for your support!
Brad, Brooke & Ben

Hi all! I just wanted to get a post on our running out here. Brad made a spreadsheet (of course he did...he's an engineer!) & figured up how many miles we have run in our training so far. At the end of this week, we'll have run 206 miles. Keep in mind that we have done more than that including the pre-training, but it's amazing to me. What's even more amazing is that we'll have logged in over double that by the time the marathon rolls around -- 461.2 miles to be exact! It's incredible to think that before we started training for this marathon, the longest I had ever gone at one time was a 10K. Well, 2 weeks ago, we ran a half marathon. What my body will feel like after we do 26.2 miles is something I can't even (nor do I want to) imagine.

Some of the things I have learned so far:
1. Training for a marathon is time consuming...seems like an obvious statement, but having a 16-month-old & getting up at 5a.m. doesn't work well. We have had to work out a special schedule with Brad's work & Saturday morning long runs take help from family & friends so we can run for 2-3 hours at a time. I just don't know why Abby doesn't want to ride in a stroller for that long!
2. I didn't know that I could run so far & so long without music or someone to talk to & keep my mind off of it. This may be the most amazing part to me so far. I can be alone with my thoughts & prayers and it's okay -- it's actually kind of nice.
3. Things hurt & chafe that you can only imagine. Enough said.

I will try to get the boys to post some too; I can't imagine that listening to me for the next 2 months won't get a little old! :) Oh, that reminds me, the official date is October 22. Brooke

We're going to get some pictures taken of us this weekend while we're running. Brad thinks it's probably not the best run to have photographs of (it's our 15 miler!), but it'll give us something to help remember the joy and PAIN of it!

This was a really special day for our family! Brad, Abby & I headed to Colorado to help with Hunter's brother & sister. With Heather being gone & Branon working, we went to stay with Parker & Madelyn. We never imagined that we would be able to see Hunter. He was given a 2-hour pass to have a picnic. What a blessing to see him in person!

Hunter is well aware that we were totally jealous when we saw this picture! We love Dan Hinote & the Colorado Avalanche! The only problem is that Hinote now plays for the St. Louis Blues...the one good thing I can see about this is that we might be able to watch him play in person now. Okay -- sorry about the hockey talk! He has a great organization called Hinote's Heroes (www.hinotesheroes.org) & that's how he met Hunter at Denver Children's Hospital.

From CP: Hunter with the Colo Avalanche player Dan Hinote and Atlanta Thrashers player Brian Larsen. They even got to take masks off for a photo for Hunter. He knows this photo would make Daddy, Uncle B and Aunt Brooke jealous!

This is how Hunter feels about his new Foley cath...obviously he doesn't love it. It feels funny and irritated.

This was taken on our April 2006 trip to Colorado Springs for Brad's dad's 60th birthday. We also went to spend some time with Hunter before he entered the hospital. It was a wonderful visit & so good to see everyone. As you can see, I didn't get on the trampoline...I'm not that coordinated! B

Okay...this will be my first official post. I want to give you the information on Hunter's Updates -- which you'll see in the LINKS section to the right. My sister-in-law (his mom) does them on a regular basis. Click on the link. When you get there, it will ask you to register for free & you'll pick a name and password for your account. You'll use HuntersUpdates (exactly like that) to enter his CarePage.
